God gave immortality (eternal life) to each of us when He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to earth to die for us and to atone for our sins. It’s called resurrection and everyone born on earth, even wicked people, will receive this gift of immortality.

 

On the third day after His Crucifixion, Jesus Christ...was resurrected (raised alive from the dead). His spirit was reunited with His glorified, perfected body and He could no longer die. When Christ’s friends went to visit His tomb, angels said, "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said."

Matthew 28:6

 

When your body dies:

Picture your hand inside a glove. The glove moves only when your hand does. Take your hand out and the glove sits lifeless on the table. This is an easy way to visualize what happens when your body dies. Imagine your body is the glove being operated by who you really are—your spirit. When you die your body gets left behind, lifeless like a glove, but your spirit lives forever.

 

For those who have salvation through Jesus Christ:

One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, "So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself--and us, too, while you're at it!"

But the other criminal protested, "Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?

We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong."

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."

And Jesus replied, "I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise."

Luke 23:39-43

 

 

 

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:8

 

 

When someone else dies and you are the one left behind—the one losing a friend or loved one—the pain of that loss is very real. But there’s a lot of comfort in knowing that if you are both Christians (both have been saved through acceptance of Jesus) you’ll see him or her again in eternal Heaven.

 

 

God’s Judgments:

And just as each person is destined to die (physically) once and after that comes judgment.

Hebrew 9:27

 

God’s First Judgment: The Book of Life

Those who are saved are promised the gift of eternal fellowship with God.

For the payment of sin is spiritual death (separation from God), but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus.

Romans 6:23

 

Those who are not saved will suffer an eternal painful separation from God.

And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:15

 

 

God’s Second Judgment: everyone gives an account of their entire life

So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Romans 14:22

 

For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

2 Corinthians 5:10

 

And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Matthew 12:36-37

 

God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.

Ecclesiastes 12:14

 

 

Final Judgment:

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.

Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20: 11-15
